Las Vegas, NV (Apr. 5, 2011) – Vegas PBS and MGM Resorts International will host a preview of Freedom Riders, an original American Experience documentary followed by a live discussion with original Freedom Rider and Congressman John Lewis (GA) on Friday, April 29 at 4 p.m. at The Mirage Resort.
Freedom Riders is the inspirational story of six months in 1961, where more than 400 black and white Americans endured beatings, imprisonment and ridicule for simply traveling together on buses and trains through the Deep South. Challenging Jim Crow laws, the Freedom Riders faced violence, resistance and racism as they tried to make a statement against inequality. After several burnings of "Freedom Rider" buses, riots and mobs, the Interstate Commerce Commission issued its order to end segregation in bus and rail stations on September 22, 1961.
The special two-hour event is open to the public and will feature an exclusive preview of the Freedom Riders documentary followed by a question and answer session with Congressman John Lewis, an original Freedom Rider.
Seating is limited for this free event and reservations must be made in advance at VegasPBS.org/freedom or by calling 799-1010 ext. 5361 through April 25. Those interested in submitting questions to Congressman Lewis about the Freedom Riders movement as well as civil rights can do so by visiting the Vegas PBS Facebook page.
The event is sponsored by MGM Resorts International and McDonald’s. Freedom Riders premieres on Vegas PBS on May 16, 2011.
